The Senior Center and Public Library are co-sponsoring a free visit with Serene Hackel, author of “Skipper Goes to War”, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Simsbury Public Library. Please register by Dec. 6.

The book is the true story of a cocker spaniel who served as a good luck charm and guardian angel for young crewmen of a B-17 Flying Fortress in World War II.

They risked court-martial to smuggle the puppy onto their plane, and having him near gave them the courage to face unimaginable dangers in their fight for victory in Nazi-occupied Europe.

Serene worked with her husband, Eugene, to write the story of his experience. After his passing, she honors his service by keeping the story of the crew’s brash optimism alive for new generations.
